5 mandatory criteria in the QCVN 06:2020/BXD . fire test of building materials

5 REQUIRED CRITERIA

IN BUILDING MATERIALS FIRE TEST

According to QCVN 06:2020/BXD

Fire testing for construction materials, components or components is an essential activity to minimize and minimize risks and risks to users and property in the event of a fire.

The application of fire testing in construction works is extremely necessary and urgent. This not only helps to improve the research and production process of building materials, but also helps to optimize construction quality.

We would like to introduce 5 mandatory criteria for fire testing from 2020 as specified in QCVN 06:2020/BXD Vietnam announced recently.

Details are described in detail in Appendix B – Classification of building materials by fire characteristics

Why test the fire resistance of building materials?

Currently, building materials are constantly being improved to enhance features and properties to help improve construction quality, in which fire resistance is an extremely important characteristic. Each type of material has different flammability, so it is necessary to have a specific report on fire resistance according to Vietnam’s current standards and regulations as in QCVN 06:2020 issued by the Ministry of Construction (BXD) .

What is fire test for building materials according to QCVN 06:2020/BXD?

A building needs to ensure high fire safety. Parts and structures are required to withstand fire for a specified period of time. In addition, the materials must be non-flammable or not dangerous to people when burning (heat generation, smoke generation and fire spread, …).

From there, we need to conduct fire tests for the building’s materials and structural components before and after construction. The best practice is to simulate the effects of a flame on the test products themselves: Measure properties in a high-temperature environment (heat from a flame or from a radiation source) on physical objects material, texture. Each standard will specify a different temperature level.

In Vietnam, the regulation in QCVN 06:2020/BXD focuses on the fields of testing: from testing on materials to testing on the complete structural system.

Research about combustible materials and 5 mandatory criteria in testing according to QCVN 06:2020/BXD

According to part B.1 in Appendix B QCVN No. 06:2020/BXD, construction materials are classified into two types in the experiment, including: combustible materials and non-combustible materials.

Non-combustible materials are considered fire-safe materials and are not subject to further subgrouping.

1. How are combustible materials classified?

Each type of material is divided into 5 separate groups depending on the level of fire hazard. Then, combustible materials are classified into groups with different levels of fire danger according to each of the following specifications:

  • According to flammability, they are classified into 04 groups with increasing danger level from Ch1 (weak fire) to Ch4 (strong fire);
  • According to flammability, they are classified into 03 groups with increasing danger level from BC1 (difficult to ignite) to BC3 (easily flammable);
  • According to the spread of fire on the surface, it is classified into 04 groups with increasing danger from LT1 (not spreading) to LT4 (strongly spreading);
  • According to the ability to produce smoke, it is classified into 03 groups with increasing danger level from SK1 (low smoke production) to SK3 (strong smoke production);
  • According to toxicity of smoke products, they are classified into 04 groups with increasing danger from DT1 (low toxicity) to DT4 (very high toxicity).

2. So which 5 fire test criteria are required to be tested according to QCVN 06:2020/BXD?

From parts B2 to B5 of Appendix B, Regulation 06:2020/BXD describes in detail the grouping of materials according to each combustion criterion as well as the test methods as follows.

STT How to classify Fire group of materials Standards according to QCVN Measurement parameters
1 According to flammability With 04 groups

The level of danger increases gradually from Ch1 to Ch4

(weak to strong fire)

ISO 1182 or equivalent Non-combustibility

T, L, m, t

2 According to the nature of fire With 03 groups

The level of danger gradually increases from BC1 to BC3

(difficult to ignite)

ISO 5657 or equivalent Ignitability

kW/m2

3 According to the fire spread on the surface With 04 groups

The degree of danger increases gradually from LT1 to LT4 (no transmission to strong transmission)

ISO 9239-1&2 or equivalent Spread of flame

kW/m2

4 According to the ability to produce smoke With 03 groups

Danger level increases gradually from SK1 to SK3 (low smoke to strong smoke)

ISO 5660-2 or equivalent Smoke generation

m2/kg

5 According to toxicity With 04 groups

The level of danger gradually increases from DT1 to DT4

(low toxicity to very high toxicity)

ISO 13344 or equivalent

Applied according to ASTM E662  combined ISO5659-2 and FTIR

Toxicity

Index HCL50, g/m3
